Bundesliga: Reus owes his first name to this star

Offensive star Marco Reus of Borussia Dortmund has revealed that his parents were actually planning to give him the first name Dennis. But they spontaneously decided in favour of Marco – because of the Dutch striker legend Marco van Basten.

“My mother was pregnant with me and was in the hospital. At that time, the 1988 European Championship was taking place here in Germany,” the BVB captain tells in the documentary Inside Borussia Dortmund published on 16 August, “Van Basten scored his famous goal there in the final. I should have been Dennis, but after that my father said, ‘His name is Marco.'”

The problem with this statement, however, is that Marco Reus was born in May 1989, but the European Championship in Germany took place in June 1988.

According to Reus, it can nevertheless be assumed that he owes his name to the European champion and former Ajax professional.
