Akanji exclusive: This is the best player of my career

Central defender Manuel Akanji of Borussia Dortmund has praised his team mate Marco Reus. When asked who was the best player in his career, the 24-year-old answered in an exclusive interview with Goal and SOCCERSCORE: “Marco Reus. He has incredible qualities, plays very wisely and with foresight. He knows he’s not the strongest, but he makes up for it with his technique and understanding of the game.”

However, there are many players with special qualities, Akanji continued. “Jadon Sancho, for example, is only 19 years old and plays with a carefreeness that is rare. Rapha Guerreiro has an incredible technique. In training, I’m always happy when he’s on my team.”

Reus was most recently voted Germany’s Footballer of the Year by sports journalists in a vote organised by the trade magazine kicker. Previously, the 30-year-old BVB captain had already been voted player of the season by his professional colleagues – for the third time in his career after 2012 and 2014.

Akanji moved from FC Basel to Dortmund Borussia in January 2018 and has been playing with Reus ever since.
