Former world goalkeeper Oliver Kahn has advised Alexander Nübel against switching to FC Bayern this summer. The step to Munich could come too early for the 22-year-old Schalke 04 goalkeeper.
“I don’t want to talk about a culture shock”, Kahn said in an interview with DAZN and SOCCERSCORE, however, a club of world class format like Bavaria is “a completely different world” compared to Schalke, where you need a strong lobby.
“If you’re not a national goalkeeper and haven’t earned the right scores internationally either, you can quickly backfire. There is a feeling for the right moment,” explained Kahn, who himself had stood between the posts of the German record champion for 14 years.
Titans’ advice to the young Nübel: “Stay with Schalke, gain experience, improve step by step and then think about such things in peace”.
You can see all Kahn statements in the feature “Schalkes Nübel: Lichtblick oder der nächsten Neuer?” at DAZN.
Born in Paderborn, he doesn’t have to put himself under pressure anyway, after all, he brings with him all the important prerequisites to one day follow in Manuel Neuer’s footsteps. “There are many talents. But with his 22 years, he’s already very far away when it comes to goalkeeping. You can’t spot big weaknesses. He’s also mentally stable,” Kahn praised.
Nübel’s contract with the Königsblauen is still valid until 2020. Discussions about an extension are currently not being held because, according to Nübel’s advisor Stefan Backs, the management of the Schalk club has delayed an offer for too long in recent months.
“Schalke had months of time to talk and did not do so. Alex has a right to think about it. Existing contracts are not one-sided,” Backs said in mid-April at Sport1.
Nübel, who replaced Ralf Fährmnan as Schalke’s number one at the beginning of the year, will have 18 compulsory games this season. He played zero five times.
